Sock Puppet Competition

Following on from our trip to Norsewood (Photos coming soon) there is a link to the competition in my useful websites list.  Thought this might be a good holiday activity for those children hanging around at home in the wet weather.  Have fun!  We will also make puppets early next term.

Here is a brief outline of the day's activities.

Troll Stroll – 

Explore the Pioneer Museum, Bindalsfaering (what is this???), Gateway Garden, Johanna’s World, War Memorial, Jail, Agricultural Museum

Simon’s place for a musical treat. 

Norsewear.  There will be a certificate awaiting us for completing the Troll Stroll.  Here we will feed the eels in the newly developed wetlands.  

Wood carver!  What will he create today?  Maybe a troll….who knows.

Taniwha Daffodil Farm.  Pick a bunch of daffodils.

Week 7, Term 3

Norsewood Trip:  I am so excited!!!  I went to Norsewood to plan our trip in detail and came home full of ideas that I never knew existed!  See the note in the bookbag!  The stories the children have written are very creative.  They have characters from the Norwegian culture and the Maori culture.  Can't wait to see them published.  We are looking at making puppets soon too. The children are lucky to have Mrs Dodd for 3 days this week.  Great to hear about good manners.

Harold comes to Haumoana!

What a wonderful week we had exploring where foods come from and a bit about the digestive system.

Outline We looked through Harold’s telescope and met an alien called Zena who crashed into Earth. Zena asked about humans and their needs. Talking Brain helped focus the lesson on where food comes from. Food was sorted into three categories; food from the ground (plants), animals, and processed food using a range of ingredients. We were also taken on a journey through the digestive system ending up in the blood stream so we could better understand what happens to our food when we eat it. Key messages: Our food comes from different places Some foods are made from a variety of ingredients We thought about ingredients and where foods come from to make healthy choices Our bodies digest food to give us energy Focus Exploring food sources- the ground, animals and ingredients Look at ingredients and start identifying foods with large amounts of sugar, fat and salt Getting to know the digestive system

We are learning to…

1. identify sources where food comes from
We successfully completed a food sort into three major categories of where food comes from (the ground, animals, ingredients or processed)

2.  discuss what happens to our food when we eat
We successfully identified and discussed the specific functions of the major organs involved in digestion

3.  identify some of the major ingredients in snack and treat foods
We successfully named the main ingredients in a variety of snack and treat foods, stating that the foods that contain too much sugar, fat or salt are treats

4.  explore packaging to decide if a food is a healthy choice
We successfully discussed the information they could find on food packaging

E-ako Maths

Do you want to Improve your MATHS skills?  This website is full of useful activities.  Click on the bright green link.  It's a fun, interactive way to practice the skills your child needs to learn and links DIRECTLY to what we are learning in class.  I highly recommend it.  Sign up and practice during the holidays.

What is e-ako maths?

• e-ako maths is a resource created to support students who are having difficulty developing a sound knowledge and understanding of place value, fractions, algebra and basic facts.
• Each student will have their own account so that they can explore the material at their own pace. Each account needs to have a unique username.
• e-ako maths provides a pathway of interactive learning modules (e-ako) for students to work through. Students can choose from the available e-ako,
• Each e-ako contains both teaching screens and interactive elements for students to complete. These interactive elements include matching tasks, multiple choice questions, and short answer questions.

How do I get started?

• To create an account for e-ako maths go to e-ako.nzmaths.co.nz/ and click on the "Register" link. Accounts are free to teachers and students within New Zealand.
